Take the survey

The CLEAR study is recruiting people with cancer, and where possible, their partners to take part in a ground-breaking research project. The CLEAR study aims to compile the most comprehensive information to date on the lifestyle and genetic factors that influence cancer in the NSW community. Take the survey, make a difference.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible you need to be able to answer yes to three important questions:

  1. Are you over 18 years old?
  2. Do you live in NSW?
  3. Have you or your partner been diagnosed with cancer for the first time with in the last 18 months?

What happens once I join to take the study?

To participate you will fill-out a consent form and a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire usually takes 30-40 minutes to complete. The questionnaire covers many aspects of your lifestyle, family background, general health and medical history.  You can do this online or by post or phone. If you consent to give a blood sample, then a pathology form will be mailed to you after your consent form and questionnaire have been received by the study team.

Once you have submitted all your study materials including the blood sample, if applicable, you will receive a closure letter acknowledging your participation and regular updates on the outcomes.

Is my Privacy protected?

All the information collected by the study will be kept confidential and will be stored in accordance with strict privacy protection procedures. Only authorised study staff will have access to the data. Names will be removed from records and replaced with a unique study ID as soon as possible after collection and before analysis. Participants will not be able to be identified, either directly or indirectly, when the results of the study are reported. Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. Participants may withdraw at any time, even after they have agreed to take part.

You can still help if you are not eligible

If you are not eligible to take the survey you can help in many other important ways such as:

  1. Click here to add your name to the “Join a Research Study” database so we can invite you to take part in other studies for which you appear to be eligible.
  2. Join the newsletter mailing list and get notified of other research studies to help defeat cancer and other Cancer Council research related activities.

Thank you to all the people who have taken part in CLEAR.

Their questionnaire data and blood samples will help us understand risk factors for cancer in NSW.

“Many people think the only way to help research is to give a financial donation, but when it comes to a broad reaching study such as CLEAR, we’re totally reliant on the courage and goodwill of cancer patients in the community.”

“We have an enormous diversity of lifestyles: we can compare and get meaningful answers about the causes of cancer”
